In the first half of July, foreign trade in Mongolia surged 83.6%. Imports doubled and exports rose 57% year-over-year, bringing in almost 900 million (USD).

Heck, I wish the U.S. had that much cash to spare! Can they spot us a few bucks?

A major Mongolian milestone was reached this week when the Tavan Tolgoi mine produced its first batch of coal -- 4,000 tons worth! It's on its way to China right now.

That's a small drop in the bucket compared to the 1.3 million China plans to buy at a price of $70 per ton. And with the mine expected to produce about 15 million tons a year by 2015, and 7.5 billion tons of coal available at this mine alone, it won't be long before this emerging economy, well, emerges!

I wouldn't say the market is schizophrenic, but with the Dow Industrials closing below 11,000 and the S&P closing below 1,200 yesterday, you can't deny that people are nervous. But instead of running for the traditional "safe haven" of the U.S. dollar (thanks for the credit-rating downgrade, S&P), we may find more opportunity in playing volatility itself.
